BUSINESS LEADING THE WAY TO GREEN FUTURE - HUHNE

1.40.58pm GMT Mon 15th Jan 2007

Commenting on Marks and Spencer's plan to become carbon neutral in five years, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"Marks & Spencer has always been a bellwether for British retailing, and its decision to go green tells us how a savvy operator like Stuart Rose sees the future of the high street.

"Business is responding to customers, and once again it looks as if ministers and Whitehall are lagging behind. If we are to create a low carbon economy, the Government must use green taxes to encourage business and consumers to change their behaviour.

"Gordon Brown should stop bottling out, and start greening up."
