NO EXCUSES FOR TAKING RISKS WITH PUBLIC HEALTH - HUHNE

12.00.00am GMT Fri 9th Feb 2007

Commenting on the news that the bird flu outbreak in Suffolk may have been caused by imported poultry, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defra Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"Bernard Matthews' claim that there were no links between Hungary and Suffolk has already been exploded by the revelation of regular poultry imports from Hungary. There appear to have been serious bio-security lapses.

"If proved, this suggests irresponsible behaviour which has disregarded public health on an epic scale.

"Any conviction should lead to penalties with the full force of the law. There can be no excuse for taking risks with peoples' health and well-being."
