GLOBAL EMISSIONS AGREEMENT IS ACHIEVABLE - HUHNE

2.35.00pm GMT Fri 16th Mar 2007

Commenting ahead of today's meeting of G8 environment ministers in Germany, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"The initiative that Germany has taken to put climate change at the centre of its work in the EU and the G8 is just what is needed to capitalise on the big shift in global public opinion.

"It is also very welcome that the big players among the developing countries are participating.

"One reason for optimism about talks at global level is that 80 per cent of carbon emissions are accounted for by just 20 countries. It really is possible to crack the bulk of the problem with an agreement between a few key leaders gathered together in one room."
