BUSH BOWING TO THE INEVITABLE OVER EMISSIONS -

12.00.00am GMT Thu 31st May 2007

Commenting on the speech by President Bush calling for global greenhouse gas targets, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"President Bush is at last bowing to the inevitable, both scientifically and politically, since there is now a clear majority in both houses of congress who support federal emissions limits.

"This is an important move that helps to clear the way for a crucial agreement at the G8 summit next week.

"However, any target must reflect the dangers that the science is highlighting. Those attending must not indulge in wishful thinking.

"It is crucial that the US also accepts the need for carbon markets to give price incentives for a new wave of private investment in renewable energy.

"Acting together, there is nothing that the European Union and the United States cannot achieve in tackling global warming."
