LABOUR HAS FAILED TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE - HUHNE

12.00.00am GMT Fri 20th Jul 2007

Commenting on the report by Friends of the Earth report New Labour, New Environment? Published today [Friday] which claims that the environment has been a low priority for the Labour Government, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"The Government's record on tackling climate change has been one of failure, with a steady rise in carbon emissions since 2000.

"While Gordon Brown was Chancellor, green taxes steadily fell as a percentage of our national income, to its lowest level since Mrs Thatcher was Prime Minister.

"This trend must be reversed if people are going to be convinced to go green. Labour should embrace the green switch. Britain needs greener and fairer, but not higher taxes."
