Public should have no confidence in Brown on global warming

11.04.00am GMT Sat 13th Oct 2007

Commenting on today's [Saturday] stinging attack on Gordon Brown's record on tackling climate change by his own adviser Jonathan Porritt, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"The Prime Minister's own adviser is in a better position than most to know that Brown is not green.

"Gordon Brown has cut green taxes steadily since 1999, has abandoned plans for companies to report their environmental impact, has vetoed road freight tolling and has downgraded the Environmental Cabinet Committee to a mere sub-committee of the Chancellor's Economic Committee.

"On the spending side, flood defences were cut last year, along with a restricted budget for climate change.

"Gordon Brown does not deserve the confidence of anyone who cares about global warming."
